About Us

Burundian Community Background

Many members of the Burundian community now living in the United States arrived around 2007, after spending more than fifteen years in refugee camps in Tanzania. These were families who fled Burundi seeking safety from ethnic violence, political instability, and the fear that had become part of daily life. In those camps, we learned resilience. We held on to our language, our songs, our faith, and our traditions — finding strength in one another even when far from home.

When resettlement opportunities finally opened, many families began a new journey to the United States with hope for peace and stability. Yet, the challenges that awaited were immense — learning a new language, finding jobs, adapting to a new culture, and building a sense of belonging in an unfamiliar land. Out of these shared experiences, our community was born.

We came together to support one another — helping families find housing, access education, and secure employment. We also work to preserve our Burundian identity by teaching our children our native language, cultural values, and history, ensuring that our heritage continues to thrive for generations to come.

Today, our community stands as a testament to perseverance and unity — people who have endured displacement and hardship but continue to rebuild, contribute, and create a future filled with purpose and hope.

    can be hard

BDUSA in Pennsylvania’s mission is to help people whose lives and social security are shattered by disaster and conflict recover, survive, and gain control of their future. We first began assisting Burundians in 2017, providing lifesaving interventions and social security assistance to internally displaced people and refugees. We pledge to continue to contribute toward creating a protective and safe environment for vulnerable Burundian communities, particularly women, especially through health, livelihoods, protection, and education interventions. Our core values include a passion for dignity, service, compassion, generosity, and trust.

How We Work

BDUSA in Pennsylvania is a humanitarian organization that helps immigrant families by supporting and changing their lives and fulfilling the basic life and social needs of the refugees of the Burundi republic by improving their quality of life.

We help immigrants by fighting against oppression, saving lives, and helping rebuild communities and livelihoods in the longer run. This allows less fortunate men and women in the Burundian communities to recover and survive crises and to live in a secure and safe environment.
